Varnish on the Signal – by John Paul Mills – p 37-41
‘Telegrapher, Kansas City Southern’
"If passengers on the Midwestern
Central’s Number 306 noticed Bill Jasper at all, they saw only a small,
pleasant-faced man who rode uneasily in his seat. He stared out at the broken
landscape through the thickening dusk, listening to the familiar click of the
wheels, and their tempo seemed to grow faster as they brought him nearer to the
life he thought had ended some years ago."
