Delivery of the first GP-38 diesels began in 1966, and for the next five
years the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors delivered 727 units to many
North American railroads. Able to generate 2000 horsepower on command, the
GP-38 became one of the most common road engines, with its high tractive force
for pulling long, heavy trains.
